Discussion-Section 2

Well, I'm hoping you're all just busy for the holidays. I wasn't going to do a new novel over Christmas, but maybe I should have given you all more time off. In any case, the show must go on, so here is the discussion for section 2. Or my comment at least. I will still post the section three discussion in a couple of days, to f inish this book before the holiday.

Sincerely,
Elysia

In this section, one of the things that stood out for me was how everything seemed to balance out in a way. Yes, the Angel of the candy counter gave Maya a cavity ;) but in everyday life for her as well. It seemed like Maya saw many victories amongst her people: they feel strong and united in church, they relish the strength given them through poetry, songs, etc., they work hard every day, etc. These small victories along with their faith, I believe, are what allowed them to continue on in face of all the hardships. Because even though Maya experienced these victories, she also lost many battles. When it came down to it, the 'whitefolk' could easily bring them down by reassuring them of their place in their world. This is most clearly illustrated on the night of Maya's graduation. They felt confident, but then Mr. Donleavy's speech cut them down.
One question I have is the importance of the ghost story told in this section. I don't know whether it was used to show us that even though Maya has grown up a lot since the beginning of the novel she is still a child, or whether there is another meaning for it.
I said it once and I'll say it again. I'm not particularly fond of this book. The story is powerful, but the writing itself, the way in which the story is told, is, to me, lacking.
